Convert PNG to WebP in 3 easy steps

  1. 1

    Drop your PNG

Drag a PNG onto the box or tap to choose one. PNG to WebP conversion runs in your browser tab.

  2. 2

    Pick a quality

High (90%) is a safe default. Try Med (75%) for big hero images and compare the preview.

  3. 3

    Download the WebP

See the new file size next to the original, then save the .webp and upload it to your site.

Lighter images for faster pages

WebP stores the same picture in far fewer bytes, and unlike JPG it keeps your transparent background.

  • Transparency stays

WebP has an alpha channel, so cutouts, logos and product shots on transparent backgrounds convert cleanly.

  • Big size savings

Photos and detailed graphics saved as PNG usually shrink dramatically as WebP. Check the before and after size.

  • Quality you control

Presets from Max to Low, plus a slider, decide how hard the image is compressed.

Where PNG to WebP pays off

  • 01

    Website and blog images

Swap heavy PNG headers and illustrations for WebP to cut page weight.

  • 02

    Shop product cutouts

Transparent product PNGs stay transparent but load faster on category pages.

  • 03

    Page speed audits

Fix the "serve images in next-gen formats" suggestion in PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse.

Why convert PNG to WebP

PNG is lossless, which is great while you're designing and costly when the image goes on a website. Google, which created WebP, reports that lossless WebP files are about 26% smaller than PNGs, and that lossy WebP is 25–34% smaller than a comparable JPEG. This converter makes lossy WebP at the quality you choose, so a photo or detailed graphic that was saved as PNG often ends up a fraction of its original size.

The big advantage over converting to JPG is transparency. WebP keeps the alpha channel, so a logo or product cutout still sits cleanly on any background color.

Lossy WebP still looks sharp at high quality, but it isn't pixel-perfect like PNG. That's why the usual approach is to keep PNG as the editable master and publish WebP. If an image is mostly flat color with crisp text, compare both versions at 100% zoom before you swap them on your site.

Using WebP on WordPress, Shopify and other sites

WordPress has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8, and Shopify, Squarespace, Wix and Webflow all take WebP files. Upload the converted file the same way you'd upload a PNG. If your theme or an email newsletter tool doesn't display it, keep a PNG or JPG copy for that one place: many email clients still don't render WebP reliably.

Converting by hand makes sense for a handful of key images: your logo, homepage hero and best-selling product shots. For a whole media library, a CDN or image plug-in that converts automatically saves time. Either way, check the result on a phone over mobile data, since that's where lighter images make the biggest difference to how quickly a page feels ready.

  • Resize first. A 4000 px wide PNG converted to WebP is still 4000 px wide. Use the Image Resizer to match the size it's displayed at.
  • Keep your PNG master. Edit the PNG, then export a fresh WebP, rather than editing the WebP.
  • Flat graphics with few colors sometimes gain little. Compare the sizes before you replace the file.

PNG to WebP questions

What is WebP?

WebP is a modern image format by Google that provides superior compression while maintaining quality. It's supported by all modern browsers.

How much smaller are WebP files?

It depends on the image. Google's own figures are about 26% smaller than PNG for lossless WebP and 25–34% smaller than JPEG for lossy WebP. This tool makes lossy WebP, so photos and detailed graphics saved as PNG usually shrink much more; the size is shown before you download.

Is WebP supported everywhere?

WebP is supported by Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and all modern browsers. Most website builders accept it too, but some email clients and older desktop apps still don't, so keep a PNG copy for those.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser.

Does WebP keep a transparent background?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so transparent areas in your PNG stay transparent in the WebP.

Is this PNG to WebP converter free?

Yes. Converting is free. Downloading the WebP needs a free PicX account, no card needed.
