YouTube thumbnail size in 2026
YouTube recommends a custom thumbnail of 1280 × 720 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The file must be a JPG, PNG or GIF (static) and stay under 2 MB. 1280 × 720 is the sweet spot: sharp on a TV or desktop, and still small enough that a JPG is a few hundred kilobytes.
| Spec | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | 1280 × 720 px |
| Minimum width | 640 px |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 |
| File types | JPG, PNG, GIF (not animated) |
| Max file size | 2 MB |
Where your thumbnail gets covered or shrunk
Most people see your thumbnail small: in search results, in the suggested column next to another video, or on a phone home feed. The video length badge sits in the bottom-right corner, and a progress bar appears along the bottom once someone has started watching. Keep faces and words out of that bottom-right corner.
Design for the small version. Check the result preview at a glance: if you can't tell what the video is about from the thumbnail at that size, crop tighter on the subject.
- One subject, filling at least a third of the frame.
- Three or four words of text at most, if any.
- Strong contrast against YouTube's white and dark themes.
Resizer vs YouTube thumbnail maker
This tool is a YouTube thumbnail resizer and converter: it fits an existing image to the right size and shape. It doesn't add text, stickers or effects. If you want a headline on the thumbnail, run the result through Image Text Overlay, or design it in your editor and use this page to get the exact 1280 × 720 export.
To upload a custom thumbnail, your YouTube account must be verified (YouTube Studio asks for a phone number the first time). Then open the video in Studio, choose Upload file under Thumbnail, and pick the JPG.
A custom 1280 × 720 thumbnail matters most for regular videos, where it shows in search, on the home feed and in suggested videos. Keep the same face, colors and framing across a series so returning viewers spot your videos instantly.
