Facebook cover photo size for desktop and mobile
Facebook displays page cover photos at 820 × 312 pixels on computers and 640 × 360 pixels on smartphones. Those are different shapes: desktop is a wide 2.6:1 strip, while mobile is closer to 16:9. Facebook needs at least 400 × 150 pixels, and for the fastest loading it suggests an sRGB JPG of 851 × 315 pixels under 100 KB.
| Where | Displayed at | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | 820 × 312 px | About 2.6:1 |
| Smartphone | 640 × 360 px | 16:9 |
| Minimum upload | 400 × 150 px | |
| Fast-loading upload | 851 × 315 px, JPG under 100 KB |
What mobile crops from your Facebook cover
Because the phone view is taller and narrower, Facebook fills it by cutting the left and right edges of your cover. On an 820 × 312 image, the mobile view keeps roughly the central 560 pixels of width; about 130 pixels on each side disappear. On desktop, the full width shows, but your profile photo overlaps the lower left on personal profiles.
So the safe zone for a Facebook cover is the center. Keep faces, products and any text within the middle two-thirds of the width, and let the outer edges be background that can be lost.
- Center your subject horizontally; mobile cuts the sides.
- Avoid the bottom-left corner on personal profiles: the profile photo sits there.
- After uploading, check the cover in the Facebook app and use Reposition if it's off.
Keeping your Facebook cover sharp
Facebook recompresses covers, and photos with text or logos can show blocky edges. Start from a large, sharp image so the crop has detail to keep, and if the JPG is big, run it through the Image Compressor to get closer to the 100 KB Facebook suggests. This Facebook cover maker crops and resizes but doesn't add text; for a tagline, use Image Text Overlay and keep the words in the center.
Group covers are wider and taller in proportion than page covers, and Facebook adjusts how covers display from time to time, so after uploading, open the page on both a computer and a phone. If something is cut off, use Facebook's Reposition option or adjust the focus point here and upload again.
