A smooth, even blur for any photo

A true Gaussian blur, the same soft effect design apps use, applied across the whole picture.

  • Gaussian blur

Soft, natural-looking blur without the blocky edges of a pixelate effect.

  • Radius you control

From a gentle 1 px softening to a heavy 20 px wash of color.

  • Runs in your browser

Blurring happens on your device. The image is never uploaded.

Why people blur images

  • 01

    Backgrounds for text

A blurred photo makes headlines and buttons easy to read on slides, banners and story graphics.

  • 02

    Wallpapers and lock screens

Soft wallpapers keep app icons and the clock readable.

  • 03

    Teasers and spoilers

Show a blurred preview of a reveal, giveaway prize or new product before launch.

  • 04

    Dreamy, out-of-focus looks

A light blur gives portraits and landscapes a soft, hazy mood.

What is a Gaussian blur?

A Gaussian blur replaces each pixel with a weighted average of its neighbors, with the closest pixels counting most. The weights follow a bell curve, which is why the result looks smooth, like a lens out of focus, rather than smeared or blocky. It's the default blur in Photoshop, Figma, Canva and CSS for that reason.

The radius controls how far the averaging reaches. Small values soften detail; large values melt shapes into soft areas of color.

The result is saved as a JPG, so any transparent areas in a PNG are not preserved.

Blur an image for a background

To use a photo behind text, upload it, set a radius around 6–10 px and download. Big images need more blur than small ones for the same look, so resize first if your photo is very large. Then add your headline with the Image Text Overlay tool or in your design app.

This tool blurs the whole image. For a portrait-mode look, with a sharp subject on a blurred background, blur a copy of the photo here, cut the subject out of the original with the Background Remover, and layer the cutout on top.

Blur also hides the flaws of a low-quality background photo. A small or slightly noisy image that would look rough at full size often works perfectly once it's blurred, because there's no fine detail left for the eye to judge. That makes blurred photos a handy fallback when you need a large background and only have a small picture.

Is blur safe for hiding private information?

A heavy blur hides faces and scenery well. For text such as passwords, account numbers or addresses, it's safer to cover the area with a solid block, because a light blur on large text can sometimes still be read. When privacy really matters, crop the detail out entirely with the Image Cropper.

Image Blur questions

What types of blur are available?

We offer Gaussian blur (smooth), which is perfect for backgrounds, privacy, and artistic effects.

Can I blur just part of an image?

Currently the tool applies blur to the entire image. For a blurred background behind a sharp subject, blur the photo here, cut the subject out with the Background Remover, and layer the two.

Will blur reduce file size?

Usually a little. Blur removes fine detail, and smooth images compress better, so the JPG you download is often smaller than a sharp photo of the same size.

Is my image uploaded?

No. All processing happens in your browser.

Can this tool unblur an image?

No, blur removes detail that can't be recovered by this tool. To make a slightly soft photo look sharper, try Image Sharpen or the AI Image Enhancer.

Is it free to blur images?

Yes. Blurring and previewing are free. Downloading the result needs a free PicX account, no card needed.
