Make a background transparent in 3 easy steps

  1. 1

Upload an image with a solid background

Drop in a logo, signature or icon to make the background transparent. It works best when the background is one flat color.

  2. 2

    Adjust the tolerance

The color in the top-left corner is treated as the background. Raise the tolerance to catch near-white shades and soft edges, lower it to protect your design.

  3. 3

    Download a transparent PNG

Check the result on the checkerboard preview and save it as a PNG with real transparency.

A transparent background maker for flat colors

Built for graphics on a plain background, where a simple color key is cleaner and faster than AI.

  • Automatic background color

The tool reads the background color from the image corner, so there's nothing to select.

  • Tolerance slider

From 5 to 80: low for crisp graphics on pure white, higher for scans and JPGs with uneven backgrounds.

  • Real PNG transparency

Output is always PNG with an alpha channel, ready for slides, websites and print layouts.

What people make transparent

  • 01

    Logos

Turn a logo saved on white into a PNG you can place on any colored banner or website header.

  • 02

    Signatures

Photograph or scan your signature on white paper and drop it into PDFs and contracts without a white box.

  • 03

    Icons and clip art

Remove the flat background from downloaded icons and stickers so they sit cleanly on your design.

How to make a background transparent

Upload the image and the tool samples the pixel in the top-left corner as the background color. Every pixel close enough to that color, within the tolerance you set, becomes fully transparent; everything else stays. The result is saved as a PNG, because JPG can't store transparency.

Because it matches a color across the whole image, it's ideal for graphics on a plain background and less suited to photos. If your logo has white inside it, like the counter of an 'o' or a white highlight, those areas match the background too and turn transparent. Lower the tolerance, or place the result on a white shape where needed.

Choosing the right tolerance

Tolerance is how different a pixel can be from the background color and still be removed. Start at the default of 30 and adjust while watching the edges.

  • 5–20: pure digital backgrounds, such as a logo exported on #FFFFFF. Keeps light parts of the design safe.
  • 30–50: scans, phone photos of paper and JPGs, where 'white' is really many off-white shades.
  • Above 50: only for strong contrast, like a dark logo on a pale background, or light parts of the design will vanish too.
  • A faint light fringe around the edges means the tolerance is a little low; holes in the design mean it's too high.

How to remove a white background in Word, PowerPoint or Canva

Office has a built-in Set Transparent Color option (Picture Format → Color) that removes one exact color with no tolerance, which often leaves a grainy white halo on JPGs. Canva's background remover needs a paid plan. Making the PNG transparent here first, then inserting it, gives you clean edges in any app.

Remember to keep the result as PNG (or WebP) all the way through. If you re-save it as JPG anywhere, in an editor, a chat app or a website's upload step, the transparent areas are filled with a solid color again, usually white or black.

Image Transparent questions

How does it work?

The tool takes the color in the top-left corner of your image as the background, finds all similar pixels and makes them transparent.

What tolerance should I use?

Lower tolerance (10-20) for precise removal, higher (30-50) for gradient or noisy backgrounds.

What format is the output?

Transparent images are saved as PNG, which supports alpha transparency.

Is my image uploaded?

No. All processing happens in your browser.

Can it remove the background from a photo of a person?

Not well. It removes one background color, so it suits logos and graphics. For people, pets and products on a real-world background, use the AI Background Remover.

Is this free?

Yes. Making images transparent is free. Downloading the PNG needs a free PicX account, no card needed.
