What this vintage filter does
"Vintage" covers many looks, from brown 1900s prints to washed-out 1970s color film. This vintage filter recreates the oldest and most recognizable one: it removes the original colors and re-tints the photo in warm browns and creams, the way toned prints from the late 1800s and early 1900s look today.
To be clear, it uses the same toning as our Sepia Filter. We keep both pages because people search for both names, but you'll get the same result from either. What makes a photo read as truly old is usually what you do next.
Because the effect is applied automatically, it's quick to try on several photos and keep the ones that suit it. Portraits, old buildings, street scenes and objects with texture take the vintage look best.
How to make a picture look old: a step-by-step recipe
Real old photos aren't only brown. They're faded, soft and framed. You can build that look online for free by chaining a few PicX tools:
- Apply the vintage filter here and download the result.
- Fade it: in Image Brightness add +10 to +20. The tool lifts every pixel by the same amount, so the deepest shadows turn a soft brown, like a print that has sat in the sun.
- Soften it: a 1 px Gaussian blur in Image Blur takes the digital crispness off. Old lenses and paper were never razor sharp.
- Frame it: add a cream or white border with Image Border for the classic printed-photo edge.
Vintage photo filter looks by decade
If you're aiming for a specific era, this table shows what to look for. The filter on this page gives you the first row; the others need color film tones that a sepia-style filter doesn't produce.
Mixing eras rarely convinces. Pick one look and apply it consistently across a set of photos.
| Era | Typical look | How to get close |
|---|---|---|
| 1880s–1920s | Warm brown, soft, framed | This vintage filter + blur + border |
| 1930s–1950s | Neutral black and white, strong contrast | Grayscale Converter + Image Contrast |
| 1960s–1970s | Faded color, warm yellow cast | A color-grading app or AI template |
| 1980s–1990s | Saturated color, flash, date stamp | A color-grading app or AI template |
