WhatsApp status size and limits
The best WhatsApp status size for photos is 1080 × 1920 pixels, the 9:16 ratio of a phone screen. Smaller images in the same shape (720 × 1280, for example) also fill the screen, but look softer on modern phones. Statuses disappear after 24 hours, and status videos can be up to one minute long.
| WhatsApp image | Best size | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Status photo | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16, full screen |
| Status video | 1080 × 1920 px, up to 1 minute | 9:16 |
| Profile photo | Square, at least 500 × 500 px | Shown as a circle |
Why WhatsApp status photos look blurry
WhatsApp compresses every photo you post to save data, and statuses are no exception. Two things make it worse: uploading a small image that WhatsApp has to scale up, and uploading a huge one that it scales down hard. A 1080 × 1920 JPG is close to what WhatsApp displays, so it gets compressed the least, and the result stays close to the photo you picked.
Newer versions of WhatsApp also show an HD option when you share photos. If you see it on the status screen, choose it for photos with text or fine detail.
- Start from the original photo, not a screenshot or a forwarded copy.
- Avoid tiny text; it blurs first.
- Use the HD option where WhatsApp offers it.
WhatsApp status safe zones
Your name, the time and the progress bar sit at the top of a status, and the reply field covers the bottom. Keep faces and any text out of the top and bottom 200 pixels or so of a 1080 × 1920 image. When you place the crop, keep the subject in the middle band. This tool crops and resizes but doesn't add text; WhatsApp's own pen and text tools work well on top of the result.
For businesses posting status updates every day, a consistent frame helps: same crop, same position for the product, same corner for prices. Make the image here, add the text in WhatsApp, and your customers will recognize your updates as they tap through their status feed.
