Character consistency without a dataset

In a cafe

Nothing to train

There is no setup phase. The reference photo goes in with each request and the model reads the face from it right then, so a brand-new character works on the very first generation.

On a hike

Everything but the face can change

Write a different pose, expression, outfit, light or location for each image. The face from your reference stays the anchor, so a series reads as one person.

On the beach

Ideogram shows the model working from photoreal shots to drawn styles. Ask for a storybook, comic or poster look in the prompt and the character comes along.

Both are Ideogram models on PicX. Pick Character when the same person must appear in every image; pick 3.0 for text-only prompts and lettering.

How to use Ideogram Character in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Upload one reference photo

Pick a sharp, well-lit photo with a single person, facing the camera or at a three-quarter angle, without heavy filters. A reference is required: this model does not generate from text alone.

  2. 2

    Describe the new scene

Say what the character is doing, their expression, what they wear, the setting and the light. Refer to them as "the person from the reference photo" and leave their face out of the description.

  3. 3

Pick an aspect ratio and generate

Choose square, landscape or portrait, generate, then keep the same reference for the next scene so the whole set matches.

Ideogram Character questions

What is Ideogram Character?

Ideogram Character is a character consistency model from Ideogram, launched in July 2025. It takes one reference photo of a person and generates new images of that same person in whatever scene, pose, outfit or style your prompt describes.

How does Ideogram character reference work?

You upload one image of the character as the reference and write a prompt for the new scene. The model reads the identity from that image and keeps the face, while everything you describe in the prompt, from clothing to lighting to location, is generated fresh.

How do I get good character consistency with Ideogram?

Start from a sharp photo with one person in it, seen from the front or a three-quarter angle, with no heavy filters or blur. Use that same reference for every image in the set, and describe the action and expression rather than the face itself.

Do I need to train a LoRA for Ideogram Character?

No. Ideogram Character has no training step at all: the single reference photo is sent along with every generation and the face is taken from it on the spot. So there is no dataset to collect and no LoRA to build or host; to start a new character, upload a different photo.

Can I edit or remix an image with Ideogram Character on PicX?

Not on PicX yet. Ideogram also offers Character Edit (Magic Fill with a mask, to place your character into an existing picture) and Character Remix (a new version of another image with your character in it). PicX currently offers the main Ideogram Character generator: one reference plus a prompt.

How many reference images can I use?

One. The Ideogram Character API takes a single character reference, and PicX does the same. On ideogram.ai, Ideogram's own app now runs character references through Ideogram 4.5 with up to five images; that newer setup is not available on PicX.

Is Ideogram Character free?

When it launched, Ideogram opened Character to all users of ideogram.ai and its iOS app for free. On PicX it is a paid credit model, charged per image, and the live amount is in the pricing table on this page. The one free image a new PicX Studio account gets is made with Nano Banana 2, not with this model.
