Haruki Aoyama, a quiet but determined second-year student, arrives hoping for a peaceful school year. However, his nemesis Renji Kurosawa, the charismatic and ruthless student council vice president, publicly humiliates Haruki during the opening assembly by exposing an embarrassing incident from last year. The entire school laughs, and Haruki's reputation is shattered before the year even begins. Haruki's childhood friend Miku Tachibana tries to comfort him, but Haruki is consumed by anger and a desire for payback. The seeds of an intense rivalry are sown as Renji makes it clear he intends to make Haruki's life miserable all year. Storylet: Assembly Confrontation: When Renji takes the stage during the opening ceremony, he publicly targets Haruki with a humiliating story, establishing dominance and triggering Haruki's deep resentment. Hallway Aftermath: After the assembly ends, Haruki retreats to the hallway where Miku finds him; she offers comfort but Haruki is too furious to listen, setting up his emotional state for the chapter. Inner Resolve: Alone on the school rooftop after classes, Haruki clenches his fists and silently vows to fight back, establishing his motivation and determination for the story ahead. Scene 2: Battle Lines The school announces a major inter-class competition — the Sakuragaoka Cultural Festival Challenge — where teams compete in academics, sports, and creative arts. Haruki and Renji end up as rival team captains. Haruki rallies his classmates, including the laid-back but surprisingly talented Souta Himura, while Renji uses his influence and intimidation to build an elite squad. As the competition heats up, both rivals push themselves to the limit. Miku serves as Haruki's strategist and emotional anchor. During the sports round, Haruki and Renji face off directly in a relay race that becomes deeply personal. Tensions reach a boiling point when Haruki notices suspicious behavior from Renji's team — possible cheating. The chapter ends at the climax of the competition, with the outcome uncertain. The Relay Showdown: During the sports event, Haruki and Renji run the anchor leg of the relay; the crowd roars as they sprint neck-and-neck, and the raw hatred between them is visible to everyone. Suspicious Evidence: After the academic round, Haruki finds discarded answer sheets near the trash that suggest Renji's team had advance knowledge of the questions, creating a moral dilemma. Miku's Counsel: Miku pulls Haruki aside and warns him that acting on anger alone will make him no different from Renji, forcing him to reflect on his choices. Scene 3: Behind the Mask After the intensity of the competition, a quiet shift begins. Haruki discovers the truth behind Renji's deep-seated hatred — last year, Haruki unknowingly took the scholarship spot that Renji desperately needed to stay in school due to his family's severe financial troubles. Renji's single mother works multiple jobs, and the scholarship was his only hope of easing her burden. The humiliation Renji inflicted on Haruki was born not from cruelty but from desperate resentment. Miku reveals she has known fragments of this story but kept silent to protect both of them. Haruki is shaken, realizing his rival's villain persona is a mask over deep pain. Convenience Store Visit: Haruki tracks down Renji's part-time job and sees him stocking shelves alone late at night, tired and quiet, a stark contrast to his domineering school persona. The Honest Talk: Under harsh convenience store lights, Renji initially lashes out at Haruki for showing up, but eventually breaks down and admits the weight he carries, creating raw emotional vulnerability. Walking Home: The two walk home in silence through empty nighttime streets, neither fully reconciled but with a fragile new understanding forming between them. Scene 4: The Price of Exposure Haruki chose to expose Renji's cheating, and the fallout is catastrophic. The school administration launches a formal investigation, and Renji faces potential expulsion. However, the investigation reveals that Renji was coerced into cheating by a third-year student who wanted to sabotage both teams for his own gain. Renji took the blame silently to protect his teammates. Haruki is horrified — his act of justice may destroy someone who was already a victim. The school is abuzz with gossip and judgment. Souta urges Haruki to fix what he started. Miku is torn between supporting Haruki and feeling that he acted too rashly.
